The role of an artist in society has always been in question. As far as in year 1825 Simon Olinde Rodriges in his essay “Artist, Scientist and Industrialist” argued that art has power to shape social, political and economic reforms. The author, who also coined the term “avant garde”, reasoned that artists should take a role of social visionaries, who raise innovative questions and ideas that in turn scientists take over, and which eventually are implemented by industry for beneficial uses. Today the history is repeating itself and the humanity steps into a new era: science, art and business work hand in hand to overcome the boundaries of the known world and together they explore yet uncharted territories and possibilities. Project “Visionary” aims to encourage cooperation between fields, promotes interdisciplinary dialogue, and invites to design new solutions with multifold potential. The project looks to establish a new model of co-existence of art, science and managment. In essence, the project proposes an idea of a short-term employment of an artist in a high-tech science and business enterprises with a so-called “open task provision”. This means that an artist spends his time in the company and investigates the internal processes in the environment and surveys possible creative capabilities. His main task, however, is to work together on the creation of a new product. Yet the product can be totally hypothetical – the main goal of this speculative approach is to find solutions to the encountered problems. We believe that artists are universal experts with a unique sensitivity, who employ different perspectives in problem solving.
CERN laboratory and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) continually and successfully collaborate with artists on projects that seemingly have no direct relation to art. A similar initiative has been spearheaded in Lithuania – last summer Department of Theoretical Physics of Vilnius University invited a group of artists to a meeting with scientists in Molėtai Astronomical Observatory to discuss scientific paradoxes and ambiguities found in quantum mechanics. Seeing how a mutual interest is present today, we decided to further encourage this kind of cooperation. Project “Visionary” is based on the experience of British artists collective "Artists Placement Group". Barbara Steveni and John Latham, the founders of the APG, state that the role of an artist in society should be much more pronounced. The APG sent artists to work in different science agencies, business and governmental enterprises with an aim to disseminate alternative practices and different points of view. From 1966 to 1980 the APG had placed 15 artists in different establishments. The time of collaboration was from several weeks up to a few years. The first engagements were made in the industrial sector (artists started working in such large companies as British Steel or ICI), and in later years artists were employed by the UK government, e.g. in the Department of the Environment or in a Scottish council. The APG developed an “open task provision” which meant that the artist’s work in the establishment does not necessarily lead to an imminent production of a tangible result. Nonetheless, while working in the company the artist brings forth observations and remarks that are valuable for the company, its employees and the artist in the long-term.
The project is initiated by Vilnius 'Pataphysics Institute. VPI is an sophistic enterprise uniting a broad spectrum of specialists from the art world, science and management and to develop interdisciplinary projects of experiential ecology and cognitive engineering. 'Pataphysics is a science of imaginary solutions, a hypothetical philosophy promulgating alternative worldviews to the one of positivist thinking. 'Pataphysics as such was first mentioned in a fictional book “Exploits & Opinions of Doctor Faustroll” by Alfred Jarry where he describes a parallel universe with a corresponding form of science – 'pataphysics. Today 'pataphysics is practiced as an academic subculture, uniting scientists, artists and writers across the world. Vilnius 'Pataphysics Institute is a member of a global 'pataphysics network. VPI maintains close relationship with College de 'Pataphysique in Paris, Amsterdam Academy of ‘Pataphysics and other organizations.
Vilnius 'Pataphysics Institute functions as an experimental knowledge economy agency that unites not only artists, but also scientists, philosophers and businessmen alike. It’s based on a principle of synergy: it is a network that helps its members to coordinate and expand the activities according to each individual’s need, interest and potential.
In the frame of the project “Visionary” the Institute acts as a mediator between an artist and a company. VPI responsibilities are communication, problem solving and presentation of a final product or result to the general public.
